Welcome!
I am the Director of the Center for Social Science Scholarship at UMBC where I also serve as an associate professor in the Department of Political Science and a faculty affiliate at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Additionally, I Co-Direct the MGMT Lab at IU Bloomington and serve as faculty affiliate to the Center for Urban Studies at Wayne State University. I graduated with my B.A. and M.A. in political science from Wayne State University, and my Ph.D. from the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Administration at George Washington University.
My research examines how local governments prioritize their economic development, environmental sustainability, and community development goals. Further, I explore the ways in which local governments plan for climate-related disasters, balance social equity in their decision-making processes, and pursue paths of economic growth. I consider myself to be a computational social scientist. My recent work has been published in the Public Administration Review, Urban Affairs Review, the Journal of Urban Affairs, the Journal of Behavioral Public Administration, the Journal of Environmental Planning and Management. I also serve on the editorial teams for the Urban Affairs Review and State and Local Government Review.
I also collaborate with two research teams on HUD-funded research which explores the impact of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program on social equity and economic growth outcome measures with scholars from the University of Idaho and Cleveland State University. Additionally, I am engaged in research exploring mechanisms to mitigate childhood-lead exposure with a team from the Center for Urban Studies at Wayne State University where I also serve as a faculty affiliate.
The courses I have taught are identified below.
